Romans 6:1–14

[1] What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? [2] By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? [3] Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? [4] We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

[5] For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. [6] We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. [7] For one who has died has been set free from sin. [8] Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. [9] We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. [10] For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. [11] So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

[12] Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. [13] Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. [14] For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. (ESV)

You know read to you the two most free John versus in the entire book of Romans is this I appeal to you therefore brothers by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice holy and acceptable to God which is your spiritual worship do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that by testing you may discern what is the will of God what is good and acceptable and perfect as anybody know a chapter that from do not be conform but be transformed Romans Chapter 12 is Roman chapter 12 as the most reached on passage in the book of Romans why why is it so loved why do people love Romans chapter 12 because this is where Paul in his in in this letter to the Romans takes a turnkey pivots from talking about just doctrine and theology and he says this is how you're supposed to live do this I think of the culture that's that's really what we want hear to it's like were God I'm zealous I'm eager I want to serve you tell me what to do and I'll do it I'll obey I think we were really taking a shortcut with that mindset because that's Romans chapter 12) 11 chapters before that it is a pattern of Paul's writing that we can actually look to it if you look you wanted to turn there but it's just call follows this pattern in Galatians chapter 4 to the end of the book Romans Chapter 12 to the end of the book Ephesians chapter 4 to the end of the book Philippians chapter 3 to the end Colossians chapter 3 the end you get the point the second half of his books are practical truths there's commands things that you need to do things that we need to obey so in our walk with price why is always a second-half what happens in the first well it's doctrine it's truth it's Dr. indifferent doctrine means it's just truth about who God is theology I think too often we think I really need your generally a Bible scholar currently studying at his window what do I need to do to obey but what we can learn from Paul's patterned way that God wrote to Paul in all of these letters Romans included is that we cannot live in obedience to God until we know the truth about God is we need to first have that Dr. Lee to have that that truth in order to to have the life that we want to to obey and lived honored him I J I Packer in one of his books he writes that the old Puritans of the 1500s and 1700s they were like redwood trees releasing the redwoods California Mike is a you cannot all things are like 300 feet tall the tallest one like 376 feet the really tall and there is wide is 24 feet you can drive your car. In fact to have somebody can drive your car you drive your car through tree and the reason he said that these these Puritans were like the redwood trees is because the roots were so deep and there the circumferences is so wide David knowledge of who God is there founded in the person and work of Jesus Christ first so that when the fires of life for the trials of life, they will be scarred and burned but not destroyed they will not be killed we need that we can't be we can't just be like blades of grass that kind of blow around in the wind or the like is of the little brother called like the windmills like like us yet likely when it really boring baseball you become a public autographs like to honor those things right you find people and when it is good I thought that I find right what that's what we want we want to be finally to serve Jesus and we want to have fun right we would have fun with fellowship would have fun serving the church would have fun helping out when I have fun playing volleyball together fellowship and just hanging out right will have fun with doctrine I probably never heard that before and I haven't heard that before so we knew we wanted we we we just have fun but the reality is we need to first be rooted in the truth of who God is and that's what Paul is doing in these first 11 chapters the Romans we saw in the first three chapters that we are sinners and our sin is far greater than willing to admit then chapters 4 and fibers on the good news of the gospel that Jesus Christ is a far greater Savior than we can ever imagine and we saw at the end of chapter 5 last week as Ethan was preaching to us that there were two characters in chapter 5 seminary two characters were the two people in it in chapter 5 one is Jesus the monopoly of the other one Roman chapter 5 verse 12 visibly 14 Adam Adam it says that sin came through Adam and in chapter 5 through 12 we saw that not only are we sinners because we send but we sin because we are sinners it's our nature is not just our actions that there was something happening when Adam sinned that he was united to all of humanity and as a human you share in that sin of Adam right is why I even even shared this in a kind of like mind blowing for a lot of people think why did Jesus have to be born of a virgin library of the board of the Allied invariant of the Virgin birth price because he wasn't born of a man he wasn't born from the line of Adam he didn't have that same sin nature that we did and we saw this other character at the end of chapter 5 which is Christ that just as all humanities united to Adam in sin those who believe and put their trust in Christ are united to Christ and his righteousness as we talked about justification we talked about these are all big theological words right justification whenever we use big theology theological words were not trying to show off or be fancy over trying to do is is give you categories to understand the true what what what God is teaching us it's almost like having a drawer like here's to hear the drug justification what's in that justification that's what that means that my sin was put on the Christ and his righteousness is goodness was put on to me there was a trade and we definitely got the better end of that trade right seems like it but Christ was glorified through that so Christ also got the better end of trade was mutual now we come to Romans chapter 6 year working to follow this line of of being united even deeper were with this this is where Paul takes the good news of the Gospel Romans chapter 3 we were sinners but God made away through his son Jesus Christ even when you are sinners Christ died for you that's the good news of the gospel right Paul takes that good news and he's now going to explain how that works wire works and what were supposed to do with it now I said Chapter 12 is where the practical stuff happens that doesn't mean that there's no practical urology in one thriller of every every passenger can apply to our lives and reduce electric or so our main ideas and I is that we are united with Christ in your union with Christ you are dead to sin in a life to God so let's pray and rule of read through a passage father you are incredibly fast in what you've done for us at the cross is difficult to fully understand and when we do soon as we think that we've understood more you show us that there's some greater truth there's something more with the we can always learn more about you May our hearts be humble tonight that we would never think that the gospel is too simple for us Lord humble me the thickness serving as a preacher word but humble although Searcy and see as we receive your word that our hearts would be open and soft and we would be willing to be changed into your likeness the name of Christ that we pray Romans Chapter 6 verse one what shall we say then are we to continue in sin that grace may abound by no means how can we who died to sin still live in do not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death we were buried therefore with them by baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father we too might walk in newness of life for if we have been united with him in a death like it is we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like it's we know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing to that we would no longer be enslaved to see one was die has been set free from sin now if we have died with Christ we believe that we also will live with him we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again death no longer has dominion over him for the debts he died he died to sin once for all but the life he lives he lives to God so you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body to me to obey its passions cannot present your members to send his instruments for righteousness the present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life new members to God as instruments for righteousness person will have no dominion over you since you are not under law degrees after anything like me reading this for the first time this is very confusing like what the world does this mean to be dead to sin I thought I'd like to be alive to God but what is that me how my book dead animal life and like one to live I'm reading here with you guys read that right hope not is solving this is having as but what is I mean it can be confusing it can be hard and that's I think one reason why we we default the same I just just tell me what to do but don't explain it to me just tell me what is God telling me to do but remember our obedience to Christ always grows in proportion to our love for him and our faith and our love and faith for Christ always grows in proportion to how much of him we see in his word two examples of this in the Bible and lots of examples but two examples of this is Isaiah is a juggling turn to keeping her in Romans 5:6 but I turned back to Isaiah chapter 6 it's towards the middle of your Bible as a chapter 6 not the reason I'm going over these examples first is is to show that God always revealed himself to a messenger before he gave them a message so before we can live out the practical truth of Christianity before we can actually do things for God you has to reveal himself to us and he does so through his word to let's look as a chapter 6 verse one in the year that King is iodide I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne high and lifted up in the train of his robe filled the temple rises seeing his vision of God says above him to the Seraphim each had six wings with Julie covered his face with two recovered his feet in width to the flu and one called to another and said holy holy holy is the Lord of hosts the whole earth is full of his glory the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called in the house was filled the smoke and I said what was made for I am lost for I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of the people of unclean lips my eyes have seen the King the Lord of hosts in one of the Seraphim glutamine having in his hand a burning coal you taken with funds from the altar touched my mouth and said behold this has touched your lips your guilt is taking away your sin tone for receipt and I heard the voice of the Lord saying whom shall I send who will go for us and I said here I am send me the so what we seen this first Isaiah Isaiah these God if God doesn't just come by since I have a mission for you first he reveals himself to to Isaiah so that Isaiah would have a right understanding of who he is what he sees a always me Brian Linda I've seen the holiness of God when we see God for his goodness it should make us feel that that guilt in our heart that we are not like that were very different set of parties is a completely different category of goodness from us and it reveals my unrighteousness might on holiness right but then what happens in the story an angel comes to ethics of burning coal this isn't just like metaphorically burning coal to the brain: it touches his lips and he says you've been purified you can make me how God didn't take a burning: touched her lips to purifies it is clean it is going better for us right Jesus came and died for us that that the blood that he shed was on our behalf and we are now therefore clean so now that we've seen God in his word we've seen who he is his holiness is set apart is and that he's purified as he's made us alive to him then and only then does he say go that's it same thing happens with all the writer of Romans reveal turn back as you can close Isaiah go back to Romans and then just turn back one book to ask 22 or three counts of of Paul's conversion in the end in the book of acts but I do look at this one possesses him telling it from his perspective on acts chapter 22 verse six excerpt 22 or six receives the same pattern almost the same story as I was on my way and drew near to Damascus about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me solve Saul why are you persecuting the and I answered who are you he said to me I am Jesus of Nazareth whom you are persecuting no those who are with me saw the light did not understand the voice the one who speaking to me and I said what shall I do the Lord said to me rise going to Damascus there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do since I could not see because the brightness of the light is led by the hand those who are with me and came to Damascus to cover the story little bit to reach the goal we talked about on Paul and suffering that Paul achieved by Christians because he was he would keep the hated Christians that's he was on his way to Damascus to arrest these people and when he gets there when the guys we were supposed to arrest the Christian for being a Christian God says okay I want to go and heal his blindness this guys like Waldo Godlike is the good news is good news for us is blind like he can't arrest us anymore God says no I need to give the site and you will show him I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name so these are all agree on that we've seen in the past that we see this pattern where God first reveals himself the truth of who he is we are undone wheat we see our need for a Savior and then the gospel always answers God always answers with the gospel is like when we willing to these problems in our lives and were always like again to get out of this and were always surprised at the Gospels the answer every time I how many guys go to church on Sunday near your messages right it's kind of like going going to movies and there's always something always like every movie there's a different scene there's a different story but always have the same ending every single time and were sometimes were surprised like man God did it again in the same way it's always through Jesus Christ so what were to see tonight in Romans chapter 6 what we read about being dead being alive in uniting price this is kind of the businesses what's happening in our salvation does what's what's going on this is God revealing himself to us through his son Jesus Christ that we would live for righteousness that we would actually have substance are roots would be deep in God that then we could obey we can have these fruits to let's look I wrote this chapter 60 starts with a question what shall we say then are we to continue in sin that grace may abound this is where I is our chapter breaks don't really help us we just read that sentence and we redeposit answer race is by no means like of course all why would we been saved look for excuses to keep on sinning it sounds like a stupid question to be honest as he sang like why you like you think you guys are asking this question the only out his writing this question out of people are asking it but they're not asking you for that reason they're not saying people because were saved and like once saved always saved Canada's live however I want and also like to haven't that's not what people were asking now there are people throughout history who looked this passage and that's what they ask but that's not what that's all appalled as if the question appalls dressing and the only way that we can know what he's talking about is a context so the context starts up in verse 20 of chapter 5 so just go back to versus is now the law came in to increase the trespass but we're seeing increased grace abounded all the more so as that need more sin equals more grace Morrison equals more grace so that as sin reigned in death Grace also might rain through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord so what should we keep sending like so that there's more grace from God God is more glorified in the salvation of sinners so do we continue sending so that God continues forgiving all says absolutely not how can you who've died to sin keep living in that's the question that were in it working at that PG goes on to explain I don't need to explain anything tonight but Gregory and walked to the passage mercy while Paul Paul really answers his own questions here so the main idea is that when were united with Christ as we size voice at the end of chapter 5 verse 21 says grace reigns through righteousness that leads to eternal life that's not our righteousness we are like that's not our good works where do you know we don't have the good works to make it to heaven will have a good works to honor God but through Christ's righteousness being put on to ask you that he lived a perfect life Jesus didn't just go to the cross and died it wasn't like God zapped himself down from heaven died on a cross and rose again to life he was born and he lived that life you live that righteousness that when he did go to the cross all of that goodness of his life is attributed to us that's the righteousness that we have in Christ that's why we get eternal life than Paul says this question should be continuance in the grace may abound by no means why how can you you're dead to sin how can you still living is asking this question could people are thinking it doesn't it doesn't make sense that people are asking for permission to send more because averse to how can we who died to sin still live in note are for our first point for verses one through four is just that you have died to sin in being united to Christ you have died to sin the three what was once or for what shall we say the Narita continuance in that grace may abound by no means how can we who died to sin still live in it do not know that all of us have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death we were buried therefore with him by baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of God the father we to I walk in newness of life so there's a little hope at the end there see that we were raised to life in the righteousness of Christ that is from the are raised from the dead by the glory of the father that we too my walk in newness of life but the main points of 11 through four is that you're dead to sin dead to sin really important distinction awards that you are dead to sin what is he not saying what was afraid that we normally hear your dad in sin writing about Ephesians chapter 2 verse one says you were dead in your trespasses and sins in which he once walked but that did like like this is like more dead than this for the most visible sign rapid innate sound like all that was pretty dead sister Laura McGrath's house for lunch allocate with by Mario kart five over the Nintendo gets what doesn't work it's dead dead it's like a so dead that I plug it in and it still doesn't work so you know the problem with the Nintendo is that its debt that's the problem okay now how dead is it I can try as hard as I want I can I can plug it I can plug into the wall I came the output in the other weight but didn't make certain all the way I can dig it out go to another outlet make sure that outlet works I guess what been working like it was dead it was super dead when you are dead in your sin you are dead dead there is absolutely nothing that you can do that can honor God it's not like your life is a mix of good and bad it's not like like all like I know I know I know sometimes I'm bad I know sometimes I make mistakes but I like like being RRR believe God if he got school and like I'm sure the Jews will need to haven't someday no it says you are dead in your sins but when you are united with Christ now this is a weird phrase union with Christ this is something that I cannot explain super well and Paul doesn't really going to details is one of those things that we have to take on faith etc. Mina does make sense to just means that it's hard to its it's something that is said and we don't really have other things to related to because it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing we are united with Christ there is something that happened when Christ died on the cross that God united those who would believe to that death so that when he says you're dead to your sin do not know verse three that all of us who been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death we were buried therefore with him by baptism into death in order any and he does but under the good news so that looks like that the first question as well I didn't live 2000 years ago I wasn't put up on across I was not raised to life from the two right we were there but Paul is saying yes you are when you put your faith and trust in Christ you are spiritually united to the Savior that the same way that he died you are now dead to your sin in the same way that he was made alive even made a likely been given new life in his spirit when did you die I go back on on it on the hill of Calvary when we made alive when Christ was made

your united with Christ now he says what's with their something one on your in verses three and four the word is a word that used that kind of it helps us make sense baptism as you are when you're baptized into his death were baptized into his death on normally when we think of baptism and this is also ugly because talking about kind of it everything about baptism we do baptism here we go to the the water tank don't someone says I believe in Jesus I want to make that public and then you get dumped under and then hopefully get lifted up right so so that's I that's one of also the main commands the inscription of the church is supposed to do is really only two things that the church is mandated to do not alert one is baptism he said that is not the other one is anybody in front of the faith baptism and such of the CD reminds it rhymes with communion Communion and right baptism and communion both of those things are symbols of Christ's death the post-symbolic of Christ that when we so that the idea of baptisms that when you're submerged underwater it's representing the fact that you have died with Christ Jesus Christ died in them as you come up is representing the fact that you are made alive so there's nothing magical happens in baptism we were commanded to be baptized that does not make you say that I will say this you cannot be saved unless you've been spiritually baptized unless you have died with Christ been made alive so this is always like Paul is saying how maybe like ever like heard this or like in evangelism only really about baptism in like being to die with Christ okay is in pretty good event of the class is that it was like my main point is that when we're talking about evangelism when were talking about the gospel we usually focus on the main point of Scripture which is all we need to focus on really that God is holy we are sinners we need a Savior Jesus is that Savior right he said he saves he died on the cross for us he took our sins but what Paul's doing here is kind of working backwards now he's saying those things are all true this is how it happens you are die you died to sin in Christ even made alive with verse four what does physical baptism represent baptism pictures the believer buried with Christ raised to new life and this actually in verse four is a transition into the next point which is that as a believer in crisis only been united to Christ and his death you are alive to God your life to God so first where dead to sin now we are alive to God working and that has we read this from 511 keep keep these to change the thoughts in your mind look for these phrases are looking for death and looking for life anything that has to do with lyrical verse five if we have been united with him in a death like his pricing truth we been united with him in a death like his we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection's what if we been united in a debt because we just have to link ourselves to the store price what a Jesus who he died and then he was again he's alive so Paul says if you died to your sin you've also been raised to new life I called another places goes on to talk about this is because it's getting a new heart we're getting in and a new heart the Old Testament talks about it as you had a heart of stone you are dead to God like you did what you didn't want anything to do with God but then he says I will give you heart of flesh's Ezekiel 36 of the I will I will I will take your out your heart soon I will put in a heart of flesh there's this transformation that happens just as there's a transformation in Christ going from a dead body to a risen Savior in a glorified body that will never again taste death one sin is then defeated its over done there was a there was a anime I saw the other day that really illustrates is pretty well in shutters from that it is my worship but so I is from sorrow so there is space so it is showed one guy and it said Jesus and it showed another guy and had a gun behind his head and said that and then showed another guy with a gun behind definite said Jesus is the main idea being it looks like death one it looks like death.Jesus seems like we got in but as we know the story that Jesus is like no I was in control to hold and not only and is not that he was just like not being defeated by death but he defeated that he conquered the grave meaning he's made a way that we can have life we been united in his death we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his we know that our old self or six was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing our old self this is also translated the all our old man old person our old self was crucified with him business old self is linked to it its business school we were when we were dead in sin you look at verse five this is the week works as for we have been united with him in a death like his that's been crucified with him first to where it says how can we who'd died to sin limited to our old self as it says in verse six our old self was crucified within this as an inverse five we been united in his death verse two says we died to sin all three listings are saying the same thing and the all explained one another there also thinking that we've died to sin we were crucified with Christ as Galatians 220 pieces I've been crucified with Christ therefore is no longer I who live but Christ lives within there were starting date to transition from this this side of of death in and talking about the reality that what happened to Christ on the cross was was very gruesome it was very dark and was very necessary and were transitioning out to what was the result of that which is life so if we died with Christ or send we also have been resurrected to new life in God the result of being crucified with Christ is there it is so will get into overtime from six was the result what happens when were crucified with him we know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin so why do we have to be crucified with Christ that were no longer slaves and what is that apply everything are you no longer are slaves to sin that means that you were slaves to sin again this is that idea being dead what it means to be dead is the means of your slave to sin means that sin is your master it doesn't matter what Senate is either God or is sent that's that's our hearts are set up our hearts are set up were created to worship something all of us we have a desire to worship something and it's either going to be God and it's good to be in newness of life or it's going to be arson and that's all that's how we all start off FY that's why work were going to get there little bit that this is also wife we still send to this day is because that's cool we've been us who were born as were born as sinners were were were were borne the image of God yes but it's it's been cracked spin it's it's it's been painted all over with this ugly sin that God hates and that's unfortunately how every person in the world is born into this world that's the one we've talked about this before if there's one thing that we all share in this room it's wrath of God apart from the work of Jesus Christ so then the good side of that should be all of us who are in Christ all those who died to sin and we been brought to live in his resurrection we share in that life after the church is the church is just a group of senators who been saved I'm not a spiritual person I'm not a great moral person to look up to I'm a sinner just like you are and I've been saved by great God just like you have or can be there's nobody beyond salvationsure it first on this morning not know the story because no Kanye West some people write anything else going on there we hear what's going on right so I love your reason I know about this is because my pastor when when I lived in Los Angeles was Adam Tyson small church most Moser says in Los Angeles are like 3 to 5000 people what you searches this is a small church you like to have 300 people so that first year because the church but there's a small church so you just a regular pastor he just preaching the word faithfully super uptight type guy wears no he wears his ties hair is always perfect and one day someone who works for further Kanye tended by three at the heard the gospel got saved they were going' to a name by Connie to come plastered he shows up IW like you just like like imagine you're sitting next to somebody who is like famous and known for explicit music hey and it's like walking out praise God this persons here hopefully here's the gospel and guess what he did and I do not have a place to say you know what's happened in in in on US heart whether he's a believer or not but also that's not my job my job is not to be skeptical is not to wait and see if he has fruit our job is to take on faith it is believed the Lord Jesus Christ and we leave with a fruit that we see of this that that pastor Pastor Adam is traveling around preaching the gospel the real gospel in our prosperity gospel not some no wishy-washy Jesus loves you he preached on Isaiah chapter 6 saying that God is holy and you're not he preached on actually think today on John 316 in Salt Lake City where there's no it's primarily Mormons and they actually take issue with the reality behind on 360 the gospel is being preached there is nobody at all in this room or anybody that you can think of would be on the reach of God nobody every single person regardless of the state of their heart regardless of how much Synod committed in their life can be forgiven because the blood of Christ is more powerful than any sin that we've ever done it's more powerful than the state of sin that were born into and how prideful are we if we think that God can forgive us and cannot forgive others so we been up to head to our sin we been killed to our sin so that we would be risen to new life in Christ and not result is that we're no longer slaves to sin though we once were the we once were we see this in first Corinthians Paul goes and he lists a bunch of cents a bunch of things I can resend anything you can imagine don't think about other people since think about your sins as listed in that list and then Paul says such were some of you but you are why we request you are sanctified you apologies so that none of us are beyond none of us are so good that we can rest of a note and say like no praise God save me I'm living a good life and also none of us who are unbelievers and say there's no way God can save you know what I've done… Of more than what you do he did for greater in terms of going to the to to to to take on your sin and giving you his righteousness that's the good news of the gospel their old self for six Reese is my old self old self is rebellious against God your blind to his glory but then verse six year old self was crucified let's keep looking on his vanity excuse this explains as he is going to assist for if this is true one who has died has been set free from sin hey so it's without fault. If you are a believer in Christ what is that mean you have died to sin what is he say one who has died has been set free from sin so if you once were a slave to sin but you died with Christ what are you not free from sin at the truth at the truth you are free from sin your free from sin he says this now if we died with Christ we believe we also will live with him we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again that the longer has dominion over him for the death that he died he died to sin once for all but the life that he lives the lives to God if these things are true of Christ and they are true of us who are in we're no longer slaves to sin we been made right with God says the death that Christ died he died to sin our old man that was in sin has died to sin and the life that we live we now live for God DC why this is important to understand or or and and believe before we can get to the obedience because in order to live for God we must first die to our sin we must first be freed from arson verse 11 you must also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus now the application of this this this knowledge okay I'm dead to sin relied to Christ application comes through here in verses 12 to 14 ago said Chapter 12 is is what happened and forward is where really nitty-gritty application comes in but this is very applicable to assist me can really learn from this first 12 therefore don't let sin reign in your mortal body let not to because you've died to sin as you're no longer a slave to sin do not let sin reign in your body you know why the better chapter 5 verse 21 is this so that as sin reigned in death noted means of sin is raining in your life urine death not in the life of Christ you are in death therefore don't let sin reign in your mortal body to make you obey its passions do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness don't be an instrument of unrighteousness right what is an instrument doesn't do anything by itself no it's controlled by something and instrument is controlled by something think of a surgeon that wields a knife the night by itself has no power under complete authority of the surgeon if we are dead in our sin if we are instruments of sin sin is our master and we aren't slaves but if we died to sin they were free from and it says we no longer have to submit to its passions does this start don't these instruments for unrighteousness but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life and your members to God as instruments for righteousness for sin will have no dominion over you since you're not under the law Grace so in short what Paul is telling us years is like don't send hey what's the problem the about your life was a problem with that statement he says if you are alive in Christ but the problem we still send we still sent to that mean that we're not like price that means that we haven't diverse and that mean that we're no longer that were not freed were still slaves to send I don't think so I don't think that was Paul's getting at that's called perfection is that what perfection is a means is that people will say because your made alive in God because Christ has covered your sin completely you no longer soon hey if that's the case and there's never been a Christian aside from his grace we also what's the difference but let's look better go to the beginning of the passage for some closer look at arm verse one what shall we say then are we to continue in sin that grace may abound first two by no means how can we who died to sin still live in the the first reason why you're not to be perfectionists because with when we are united with Christ and his death we cannot go on with an unchanged pattern of centerlines we cannot have an unchanged parents in their lives because there's a moment we talked about this before there's a moment when you put your faith in Christ your made righteous Christ's righteousness is given to you when when you stand before the holy God who judges in wrath he doesn't say look it always things he says looking always good things that crisis is given to when were united with Christ and his death we cannot go with an unchanged pattern of sin the changes happen your heart so there will be change it says you're not obey its passions anymore your desires are to change you may still sin but you're not the one of the things that are related to that you're not an edit an example of this is a good from the Pilgrims progress I thought I'd is as an example before but in Pilgrim's progress is an old story old English this guy he hears the gospel he's put on the straight road and he says just go straight keep going straight and of course you know his life he does everything but go straight. So many times but while he's going on this path he has this pack on him he has this weight and it's his guilt for all the sins that is ever committed and he's walking with this guilt on his back and he can't shake it and it's partly what's causing him to fall off the path until there comes a point where he sees the reality of the gospel in the cross that Jesus took that front in the pack falls off and it rolls away a when we when we have been set free from sin we no longer have that pack on what happens when we send keeping a pack around document we might not have it on her shoulders but were kindly note that in along the kind of just keeping it a little the Queen phase in the corner of her house like hey maybe maybe it wasn't that heavy and I don't little bit auto is pretty bad but we no longer have the pack as our master in the longer wheezes down that we cannot look up to price another reason why this is not speaking of perfectionism is because her six says we are not slaves to sin but we can still fall into sinful attitudes and actions without sin being our overarching master I maybe this is happened to you I think Sunday is the day that we are most prone to having a bad attitude I do know it is but just things happen on Sundays and we just got a bad attitude somebody says something somebody does something we got these attitudes of sin another thing that can kind away honest but it's actually very freeing is when we look at these these last verses 1112 and 1327 so you also must consider yourselves what is adequate is that consider an action command he sang you must consider yourselves the distance what is a verse 12 don't let sin reign in your mortal body what is in verse 13 don't present yourself as members to send but present yourselves to God what are those those are commands why would Paul beginning of command for people not to send if they were sitting there's no need for it if if where if we're perfect if we can just live life and were not sending anymore there's no need for a command like that the reason Paul gives these commands is because we are in a battle against our sin were in a battle against those old ways the old things in our life that we party been set free from were still fighting that I don't know why it's kind of like posting a few been set free from sin why are you going back to it Peter uses the example of its archives like a dog going back to its bonnet by anybody seen that the guide dog, dog throws up on the floor I go to get a paper towel I come back and it's gone why to that dog is a stinking · but because the dog just like ice produces nasty wretched vile stuff and just when we think we can clean it up were doing it again but the reality is when we been set free from sin we will not continue in a pattern of sin because God's Holy Spirit will convict our hearts God will work through the church in all God's Spirit works through the church you might not see a blinding light and got to say I stop sending but what you might do is bring a brother in Christ lungs as a mentor notice that your struggle is my position crisis to date I noticed you said this and as you didn't you know doing this a lot and in that moment you can harden our hearts arena be broken you say you're right I need God's forgiveness I need I need to to to to am not a slave to the sin and I need to be in the grace of God you see the difference sin will have no dominion over you since you're not under the law but under grace his last three verses that we had versus 12 to 14 this is the reality that you are under God's grace so do not let sin training your life not let simmer in your life hall same author enough looking chapter 3 had this to say that we if there's anybody who could both about how much of a good guy he was and he says this not that I have already obtained this talk about this this perfection of life or that I'm already perfect I'm not perfect he says but I press on to make it my own because Christ Jesus has made me is if you can say Christ Jesus has made me his own when the if you put your faith and trust in Christ you know who you are your Christ you belong to you were slave to sin now your sleep to write that this could happen accurate about that in Chapter 7 but your new Masters Christ if you belong to Christ as I will press on to make it my own so you don't know what this is the practical application you were supposed to do press on that you would make it your own you're not perfect a crisis in your case to live like that's what he said so I have a message to believers you are dead to your sin do not live in not limited to not let it linger do not hide it not think that it's okay there's no there's no thing in our life that goes unnoticed by God there's no word that we say there's no thing that we do and even though we may not notice immediate consequences there are all their consequences for actions assisting throughout Scripture everything that you do has a consequence I have learned that that you had that the things that I thought didn't impact other people bows like op-ed is really matter that's what came back to Terry Neal hurt me in the end every action that you have that you do has a concert not getting away with to repent turn to Christ unbelievers the. Your sharing your great kind of on the fence you may be maybe you're just angry with God may be maybe is the first time hearing the gospel and you're just not sure if but if you're an unbeliever if you if you're not in Christ not dead to sin you're dead in nursing you're dead in your son the good news is that you can repent and find that life in Christ that he will he will take your sinfulness and crucified on the cross and he'll give you that newness of life and he'll give you that desire those new passions to to live for him to honor Alameda close with them this is a story that I I think is hopefully helpful in helping us see this this lived out there's some people here who if you know me for a while you clearing of the story is fine but a few years ago I was at as a beach in Los Angeles with some friends and we were doing reaching out and we there is a sand castle building contest overall the little sand castles in one of our friends and Paul he he built the shark and would like the best one like are the sky will and so we being like guys who have bright ideas we started digging holes and were just like okay I can dig holes alike were just like digging trenches and his wife auto reset the beach is so worth retrieving holes and Paul next to his shark is really cool basic he started digging this whole pilot down like straight out and as a tall guy 6 feet tall he don't assemble if you like he's here at the Cassandra here and so he was somebody passes in the camera and the like by cultlike take a picture like of us like staying on the tops of the people standing on the edge of the whole Angie Crouch's delegates to the picture and from the weight percent collapse in I wasn't I wasn't right there I was in a hole next to him instantly shuts out come up overall digging this people are holding their feet get too tired if we argue hold their feet digging digging a sassy can casino that there is no air there is only the minutes are precious digging wittingly and the eventually the permits, fire department comes these are tools they they are the dig is nothing we can do at this point but is praying in the sand and the fire department: the body's dead slip I'm on a gurney in the hospital declared dead and in thinking back on this I realize one of the reason why it was so hard to dig for him was not because it was just physically exhausting but because we are you when you're working so hard for something that you know is not alive there's no so if Uris if you're dead in your same and you're trying so hard to get to God knock enemy you can't but the hope in this story was that supposedly for Paul new crisis Savior Paul had Artie died to sin so you know the body diet is the first person out of all of us who is reason to new life with price if you want that if you if you don't want to be a slave to sin you don't to be working in an and digging trying to get yourself out of this whole give your life to Christ's believe in God our father and Christ the son and the Holy Spirit that what he says in his word for you is true percent will have no dominion over you since you're not under law were not a nursing over under grace the print of this to be true for you that we would be under grace of God and that we would therefore live in father in heaven thank you so much that this this truth about your son Jesus Christ that she died to sin is applied to us because we are united with him we thank you that not only have we died in Christ that we been risen to new life that are our desire is no longer for the sin that we struggle with Lord but we fight against sin that we would press on to achieve the prize that is eternal life with you but I printed to encourage my brothers and sisters this morning that they would know that what you've done for them did not stop the day they were saved but it is continuing pray that you would call us tonight to holiness that we would renounce our sin that we would turn away we would give it to you Lord knowing that you've already paid for I give us hope enjoying this newness of life that we would encourage one another that we would call one another out on sending that when we are called on sin that our hearts would be soft that we would desire to be changed we love you Lord we we thank you that you show your love for us and your son Jesus Christ and his work on the cross
