It Is Well

"..we recorded Jimmy Needham singing “It Is Well.” It’s a track from his latest album, The Hymn Sessions. At the three-minute mark of the video below, John Piper tells the moving story behind the hymn. Horatio Spafford lost his four daughters in a tragic accident at sea. And in those horrifying moments, God amazingly put these lyrics on his lips."

It Is Well With My Soul

Horatio Spafford
See a reproduction of the original manuscript.

When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea-billows roll,
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to know;
It is well, it is well with my soul.

Tho' Satan should buffet, tho' trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed his own blood for my soul.

My sin - oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin - not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to His cross and I bear it no more;
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, oh my soul.

And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend
A song in the night, oh my soul!
